Talk: Permaculture in Palestine: London (Sat 13th June, 2015)

Join Alice Gray to discuss the role of trees in the Israel-Palestine conflict: both as a tool for colonisation and displacement, and as a land-based resistance strategy used by Palestinians.

Alice, who lived and worked in Palestine from 2006-2014, will also discuss the Israeli strategy of creating dependency through dislocating communities from their environment, and how permaculture can help to overcome this dynamic in combination with the Palestinian strategy of ‘sumoud’ (steadfastness).

Alice Gray is a freelance permaculture teacher and designer. She has taught permaculture and environmental studies at Al Quds and Al Najah universities, co-founded an experimental permaculture farm (Bustan Qaraaqa) and coordinated a tree planting campaign for grassroots resistance to Israeli colonisation for several years.

In addition, she has worked quite extensively with Bedouin communities in the Negev and West Bank, teaching permaculture and designing household gardens for food security. She is now a director of Byspokes Sustainable Community Development, and a coordinator with GREAN Palestine (Grass Roots Environmental Action Network).

This event aims to shed further light on the issues examined in The Mosaic Rooms exhibition Garden State (14/05—20/06/15). It also accompanies our specially commissioned pop-up ‘guerrilla’ permaculture garden by Smallworld Urbanism.Free.
